Field Contents in a Live Search

Actions

Explain the problem as you see it

Hello, I thought this might be a pretty interesting feature. Given that fields are essentially like attributes that a node has, why not give them the ability to be queried according to that? This would give search new use-cases.

For example:
image.png

In this case, I'd like the Concepts filter to be automatically updated as an "OR" with the nodes contained within my Concepts field of the PARENT node. What this would enable me to do, is to find related claims that I can use my #reference node to support as well.

Why is this a problem for you?

I'm still trying to find a method to find related claims as easily as possible (this is still really difficult to accomplish quickly in Tana). Resurfacing is extremely important.

Suggest a solution

Would be nice to be able to quickly access the node's information (not only when initialised, but when updated/changed). If this is paired with the Live Search field, it could be really powerful.

Supertag Order Priority

Actions

Explain the problem as you see it

When applying two supertags, I often face the problem of reordering them.

For example:

- example item #tag1 #tag2

However, sometimes I always want #tag2's fields to be on top of #tag1's fields. For example, my tag2 might contain actionable fields and hence need to be reordered on top. The only solution currently is to rearrange it by deleting tag1 and readding it again:

-example item #tag2 #tag1

Why is this a problem for you?

Sometimes I like to apply a new supertag over another supertag but it's kind of annoying having to delete the old tag, add the new tag, then readd the old tag - it's 3 more steps haha.

Suggest a solution

Perhaps we could have some kind of priority setting, or condition, such that the tag's field will always appear on top of another tag's field?

New Field Type: Live Search

Actions

Explain the problem as you see it

This stems from the perpetual problem I'm having with bidirectional fields. Look at the bidirectional field link's description, as quoted here:

Using an example, when we create Alice in Wonderland #book with the Author field as Lewis Carroll #author, currently we are unable to automatically populate Lewis Carroll #author such that its Books field shows Alice in Wonderland #book

Why is this a problem for you?

As in the bidirectional fields description, same thing -- too many clicks. I can do this easily in Notion, but I can't replicate my workflows in Tana.

The most frequent solutions posited are:
1) "Just create a live search!" - A live search cannot appear in a table to be seen in one glance.
2) "Just embed a live search within a field" - That still requires 2 clicks. In a table serving as dashboard, I expect to be able to see all my data at one glance - not having one extra click per item - if I have 50 items, do I need to click 50 times? That's a little unreasonable...
3) "Just build it in the title" - This is ugly and just does not work.

Suggest a solution

I've thought of something: A Live Search field.

This means that we should be able to configure a Search Expression, just like in a proper Live Search, and be able to use search expressions like>field:: PARENT which will easily solve this problem.

However, this method may not be able to replicate "Rollups" in Notion. Also, live searches can be very "busy" in screen estate, so some method to display its results in a truncated way in Table View would be a good way.

Reimagining an Improved Resurfacing Interface

Actions

Explain the problem as you see it

One of the biggest problems and friction points of many personal knowledge softwares is that they have never sufficiently solved the resurfacing issue. I believe that it is not just allowing it to be accessed (many PKM can have some kind of workaround to resurface stuff) but the number of clicks it takes to reach resurfacing of material. Nick Milo called these notes 'zombie notes', essentially notes that are not linked and have nearly zero chance of resurfacing. The issue becomes far more prevalent in Tana since there are no 'notes' in Tana, just nodes - there is a lot of potential for repeated, duplicated, zombie nodes.

Why is this a problem for you?

This is a problem for me because of the friction it takes to find a resurfaced node.

Here is an example of how I'm able to resurface a previous node while working on something:
image.png

Here I have two layers I need to do to get to the old material:
1) shift-click "Pareto Principle" to open up the node below
2) open up the live search node "Claims"

If you are thinking "this are just two steps", then I think this is completely wrong. You see, in our usual pattern of thinking, we are pulling associations into our minds all the time. We re-cognise (having cognised it before) and old material is resurfaced to be used immediately.

Here is an example of a parallel example of "resurfacing" happening in Obsidian:
image.png

What you see above is that whenever I mention a particular node, it will not just bring up that node - it automatically shows in its interface all the associated nodes - I see ideas 2, 3, 4 levels deep. All of these ideas merge into this very moment when I'm typing it.

This is how napkin.one does it elegantly:
image.png

Robert Haisfeld also recently demoed a concept which also valued resurfacing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9edLOMad7Cc

Suggest a solution

I'm not suggesting it has to be a graph view, because napkin.one did it in their own special way. I'm kind of thinking out loud here, trying to be constructive in some way without being too abstract. I think there should be some kind of solution to minimise the difficulty of getting from current context to resurfaced context. There should be some way to get the ball rolling. What do you guys think - resurfacing - valuable or not so valuable?

Pros: Reduces duplication, streamlines processes, builds on existing context and work instead of restarting all the time, makes collaboration even more powerful by building on existing contexts made by others - it is literally compounding on steroids.

Then the question comes: "Is this for just a select minority of users?" And I'd argue that people do not know how valuable this can be until it is made easy for them, just like how many people probably thought AI was too sophisticated until it was made easier in Tana. I did not realise how powerful direct resurfacing can be until I used it. It creates a cycle of continuously improving work.

Ability to edit built titles

Actions

Explain the problem as you see it

At the moment, we cannot edit built titles if they are in a layout like such:

image.png

Would be far more intuitive to be able to edit the title directly.

Why is this a problem for you?

It's horrible for editing or changing the title.

Suggest a solution

Make it editable.

Indicator when mandatory field is not filled up

Actions

Explain the problem as you see it

Currently there is no way to see if a mandatory field is filled up when the parent node is collapsed, beating the purpose of a "required" field. The only way to see it is a small "?" on the right side.

Why is this a problem for you?

Given that most supertagged nodes start off as collapsed, it is difficult to see at a glance what fields are not filled up inside supertagged nodes.

Suggest a solution

It would be a nice touch to be able to have some kind of indicator just next to the tag, maybe like a red dot or something (the team probably has a better aesthetic sense than I do 😂) to indicate that "Hey, you have not filled all the mandatory fields in here yet", so that we can then expand the node and fill it up.

Bidirectional Fields

Actions

Explain the problem as you see it

Using an example, when we create Alice in Wonderland #book with the Author field as Lewis Carroll #author, currently we are unable to automatically populate Lewis Carroll #author such that its Books field shows Alice in Wonderland #book.

Why is this a problem for you?

The only way to access what books Lewis has written is to look at the References section below the page when we zoom into the node, or when we shift click > click the number of references. Way too many clicks. And also, it is only contextualised one way - this means that Tana only has the ability to contextualise in one direction.

Suggest a solution

Allow bidirectional fields.
