Get functionality to the turn of the millennium

Explain the problem as you see it

There is a cascade of problems.

First, it's frustrating that spelling errors are highlighted with a wavy red line, but there is no spell corrections given. That impedes my ability to use Tana to write with. This is like 1980s functionality expectation.

But, as I try to ask the AI about this, it turns out in the app that the AI knows nothing about Tana. I have to go to help and interact with the AI. That is bizarre. The AI for the app knows nothing about the app???

Then, when I talk with the AI in the help, it knows about Tana. Hurray, it tells me I can put in an idea. Which I'm doing now. How? First, I'm told to go and do it. If I knew how to do it, I wouldn't be asking. Then I'm told to use a link which is provided. Although it looks clickable it is not. That is also, like 1980s technology. Then, I'm told to cut and paste it into a browser. Yikes. Really? That's also been done away with for decades. Then, I try to highlight it to copy it. Nope, the highlight disappears as soon as I take my finger off of the mouse button. Again decades old functionality that doesn't work. I can hover over the copy and get the whole AI message, but not a part? Dare I mention that that is decades old technology? Then, I have to type in the URL. I do, and I have to log in. The website is so slow as to leave me thinking it's broken. But, it eventually comes up. At least in this window that I'm typing into the spell checker works.

Wow.

Why is this a problem for you?

I actually wrote it in the problem description, I think it's obvious. Basic functionality doesn't work. The website is crazy slow

Suggest a solution

Put more servers behind the website so that it actually has a reasonable speed to it. Have basic technology that has been in use for decades, like spell checker, like clickable links. The way the app works is embarrassing for you all. The solution is to not have basic problems that should never even exist.

For the Windows app, I think it is the Electron app that imposes the spell checking. Not Tana itself. It also drove me crazy and I didn't know how to turn it off. (Something the Tana team should be aware of, in terms of onboarding. I recommend switching it off by default).

Anyway, it is under "Options" in the menu of the app.

I appreciate your answering. I actually like a spellchecker, but one that marks them as incorrect with no choices is braindead. It works correctly in the browser version. FWIW, I found that the ChatGPT Windows app was equally almost unusable, and stopped using it. I suppose that doesn't bode well for Windows. However, using an app has advantages and I'd hope companies using AI would be able to use AI to get the app to work well.

I'm curious how big the dev team is for Tana. I get the impression it must be small. I like the nodal structure, and it seems potentially powerful and something I'd like to use and could use effectively, but I feel stymied by the difficulty in doing so. Although no longer in SW dev, it's my background, and I have an upper limit for clunkiness, which would have been surpassed. I am friends with Steve Scott, an avid Tana promoter and user. I am not local with him or I suspect I'd have sat down with him and gotten much more comfortable quickly. My experience with ChatGPT is that out here in the boonies of East Coast and Rural EC Lake Placid to boot, everything AI is incredibly slow making the response time painful at times. I suspect we just don't have the user quantity to warrant enough servers to smooth things out. But, ouch.

I haven't given up, but I'm very frustrated.

PS it would also be helpful if I could reply to the email I received and it would get posted into this comment thread. As it is, I get a nondeliverable notification and had to go to the comment to reply via copy and paste. It just seems that easy things are hard, hard things are harder, and perhaps - I'm hoping - impossible things are at least possible.
