I've been thinking along the same lines. I have plans on my roadmap to build in this direction, but currently not in a hurry because I'm sure the team will make building such experiences easier and more powerful while I work on other things that make more sense in the short term.

This could also be a view setting. Like on any individual calendar view, you could toggle "Discrete colors" ON, and select the tags or attributes you'd like that setting to apply to.
