Better handling of images

Explain the problem as you see it

Two problems currently:

1) Images right now fill up the entire horizontal space. It would be nice to be able to minimise it into a thumbnail / tile view / or reduce the image size to a default size.

2) When selecting options in Instance fields, where images are tagged with the #tag, images cannot be seen at all under the options. It would be cool to have some kind of tile/card view.

Why is this a problem for you?

Images are a huge modality of how I use tana as well and in knowledge work. But it's pretty clunky right now in how it is working.

Suggest a solution

As suggested above.

For tana to compete in an extraordinarily large market, there are some simple things that need careful consideration. There is lots of complexity and flexibility but this (by definition) appeals to a smaller cohort of users when compared to basic 'quality of life' capabilities. My two needs that allow me to abandon other tools are:

  • Image flexibility and configuration
  • Some form of latex for mathematical functions

Every other tool I have looked at cover these to varying degrees. It will be a deal breaker at some point. The AI integration is strong enough - surely it's time to think a little more about things that (I assume) a large number of users will benefit from.

thanks

Yes please. Probably the number one thing for me that doesn't work well in Tana. Would love to be able to click and drag to resize images.... but if that's not possible... would at least like to be able to choose a smaller version. The large size that images show up with now makes them really clunky and unnatural to work with around the rest of the notes.

For now, it keeps me tied to some other apps that can work with images a bit easier.

I came here looking for the same solution, and while reading @Winston 's post about wanting a card view, it struck me — Tana already has this feature! 🎉

Here’s a simple workaround:

  • Create a dummy parent with the image name.
  • Make your images children of that parent.
  • Then set in parent: View Options → View As → Card.

This way, the images appear as neat little cards. You can’t fully control the exact dimensions yet, but at least you can shrink them down to a thumbnail-style view, which feels much cleaner.
